Courses

JSA Summer Programs are structured around three weeks of intensepolitical study at three prestigious universities: Stanford, Princeton and Georgetown.

Here’s what to expect:

Students take one elective course of their choosing in government during the morning sessions. Afternoons are dedicated to our Congressional Workshop and Speaker's Program.There is also plenty of time to relax and unwind with activities on campus as well as cultural trips to the universities’ host cities.

Tuition and Scholarships

Fees for JSA Summer School at Georgetown, Princeton and Stanford sessions are $4,500. For the JSA Diplomats program in Beijing, China, the tuition is $5,000. This amount includes housing, meals, tuition, textbooks, and all other academic expenses. Travel costs are not included in the fees. However, staff members will be available to help transport students to and from campus from nearby airports. Most Summer School students cover their expenses with funds from a combination of sources, including local sponsorships, family members, and Junior Statesmen scholarships.

With a shaky economy, many families are trying to figure out how to pull together the tuition for Summer School. The Junior Statesmen Foundation (JSF) administers Summer School scholarship funds of more than $450,000. Partial scholarships are awarded from these funds on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, and motivation to attend. To be considered, complete the scholarship application available online and included in this brochure. Scholarships are not available for the JSA Diplomats Program.

Once you are accepted to the summer school, you can participate in the JSF Fundraising Academy and learn how to raise funds for your tuition from community sources. We provide a step-by-step fundraising guide, online fundraising tools and one-on-one assistance to help you raise funds for your tuition. If you want to attend, we’ll help you get there.

JSA Summer School at Princeton University

Princeton, New Jersey

July 10–July 31

JSA Summer School student explore the world of politics whileaccessing the academic resources of this Ivy League university.Chartered in 1746, Princeton is the fourth-oldest college in the United States. Famous Princeton University alumni include Woodrow Wilson,Michelle Obama, James Baker, George Shultz, and Sonia Sotomayor.

An exciting Speakers Program on campus and at the United Nations in New York City introduces you to leaders who make andinfluence public policy. Previous guests have included members ofCongress, U.N. ambassadors, New York City leaders, journalists anduniversity scholars. On a cultural trip to New York City, studentschoose from a variety of activities organized by Summer School staff -viewing the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, shopping onFifth Avenue, exploring the neighborhoods of Chinatown, Little Italyand Greenwich Village, visiting the bright lights of Times Square orcatching a Broadway show.

JSA Summer School at Georgetown University

Washington, D.C.

Session I: June 19–July 10

Session II: July 17–August 7

Founded by Archbishop John Carroll in 1789, the same year the U.S. Constitution took effect, Georgetown is a major international research center with 14,000 students on an historic campus overlooking the Potomac River and the nation’s capital. In Washington, D.C., with its government institutions, cultural riches, museums, and performance centers, JSA Summer School participants don’t just learn about politics – they live it.

The Speakers Program at our Georgetown summer school is particularly strong. Guest speakers have included Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy, Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, White House Press Secretaries Ari Fleischer and Michael McCurry, Presidential Advisor Karl Rove, Sen. John McCain, Sen. Hillary Clinton, and many others.

JSA Summer School at Stanford University

Palo Alto, California

June 26–July 17

Located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford is one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions. Palm trees, red-tiled roofs, and warm sunny days welcome visitors to this mecca of innovation and entrepreneurship. An exciting Speakers Program on campus of Stanford University offers a stellar selection of entrepreneurs, scholars, politicians, and other luminaries who address Summer School participants on hot topics in U.S. government, international politics, business, and the media. Guest speakers have included economist Milton Friedman, Chinese dissident Harry Wu, former Attorney General Ed Meese, and Dr. Clay Carson, director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project.

Students take a break from the classroom with a cultural trip to San Francisco organized by the Summer School staff. Activities may include riding a cable car “halfway to the stars,” visiting Golden Gate Park, shopping in Union Square, touring Alcatraz, sampling seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf or exploring neighborhoods such as Chinatown and North Beach.

JSA Summer School at Beijing

Beijing, China

June 29-July 24

Each Summer, twenty young leaders from across the United States travel to Beijing, China, to learn about modern China and the art of diplomacy. Hosted on the campus of one of China’s premier Universities, the JSA Diplomat program aims to provide America’s future leaders with the skills to represent their country effectively on global issues. During the month-long session, students can earn college credit in courses in Chinese history and language. They also develop leadership skills through interactions with Chinese and American officials on political, economic and social issues.

China is the world’s fastest growing major economy. Students will have a chance to see this economic engine in action in modern-day Beijing, host of the 2008 Summer Olympics. From trips to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the famous Terracotta Warriors of Xian, and many other historic sites, students will have a hands-on experience with a culture that dates back nearly 6,000 years. They also participate in a youth exchange with local Chinese high school students and in service-learning projects with non-profit organizations around Beijing. Through these experiences, students sharpen their language skills and learn about youth culture and contemporary issues in China today.
